Confident in undertaking UN human rights council membership
VGP 09:09, 2013/11/08
Viet Nam is confident in undertaking the role of a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, affirmed Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson Luong Thanh Nghi at a press briefing on Thursday.

The country pledges to effectively contribute to the Council’s efforts in improving the efficiency, transparency, objectiveness, and impartiality on the basis of dialogue, cooperation, equality and mutual respect, he added.

Over the past years, Viet Nam has gained numerous achievements in protecting human rights like civil, political, economic, cultural, and social rights that are widely recognized by the international community.

Promotion of human rights and active engagement of people in all socio-economic aspects are the crucial factors for the success of the Renewal process in Viet Nam, said the Spokesperson.

Upon such foundations, Viet Nam hopes to join the United Nations Human Rights Council for the tenure 2014-2014 to be able to better contribute to the joint effort of the international community in accelerating and defending global human rights, according to Mr. Nghi.

Regarding the time Viet Nam joined the United Nations Convention against Torture, Spokesperson Nghi said Viet Nam has always made practical contributions to global peace-security, development and human rights.

On November 5 this year, PM Nguyen Tan Dung empowered the Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to the United Nations to sign the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

The accession to the Convention reflects Viet Nam’s respect for and serious observation of its commitments to human rights within the framework of the Universal Periodical Review mechanism
