Bai Choi singing in Quang Binh wins UNESCO recognition

The festival aims to introduce the cultural values of the art form to local people, especially young generations.
Quang Binh province’s Department of Culture and Sports on April 24 received a certificate from UNESCO recognizing Bai Choi singing as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity, VNA reported.

In addition, the province also held the 2019 Bai Choi singing festival for the first time, in a move to introduce the cultural values of the art form to local people, especially young generations.
Speaking at the event, Vice Chairman of Quang Binh People’s Committee, Tran Tien Dung said that the ceremony is important cultural activity and aims to honor the values of Bai Choi singing and enhance patriotism, as well as people’s responsibility in the conservation of cultural heritage.
“The event contributes to arousing national pride, a sense of responsibility on the protect and promote cultural heritage values from all people in Quang Binh province,” Dung added.
The official said that the province will held a series of programs to develop Bai Choi singing, including refresher courses, restoration of parts of the heritage on the edge of oblivion and introduction of the heritage in tourism activities.
Bai Choi is a folkklore singing genre popular in the central provinces of Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa provinces, and Da Nang city.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recognized Bai Choi as a national intangible cultural heritage during 2014 - 2016.
According to the Inter-governmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, Bai Choi is an important cultural activity in Vietnamese villages and communes, brining entertainment and art to the community.
Earlier, the recognition of Bai Choi singing was made during the 12th session of the UNESCO Inter-governmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Jeju, South Korea on December 7, 2017.
