Anti-corruption fight is at a crucial stage: Party chief
Addressing a national conference on anti-corruption held in Hanoi on June 25, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong affirmed that the anti-corruption campaign is at a crucial stage.
The Party leader stressed that corruption prevention is an important work that needs to be conducted regularly, continuously, resolutely and patiently. Thus, Trong called for strengthening inspection and eliminating corrupt officials and civil servants from state agencies. He also called for stepping up measures to timely block and seize misappropriated money as part of the Party’s crackdown on corruption.

He urged the delegates, including members of the Party Central Committee, to work out effective approaches and solutions to create substantial changes in this domain.
Together with strict punishment of violations, it is necessary to have a mechanism to protect and encourage those who dare to think, dare to do and dare to take responsibility and lead the way in reform for the country’s development, he noted.
The party chief emphasized the importance of fostering and increasing the efficiency of disseminations on anti-corruption work to make the public know that the Party's rectification and punishment of violated officials and Party members do not slow down development, but purify the political apparatus and officials, and consolidate confidence of people.
The press and mass media should encourage and back the involvement of the entire political system and people in the fight against corruption, he suggested.
The Party leader also called for efforts to improve the building of the Party and the political system, and combat individualism, selfishness and group benefits.
Party members in any positions, if violating law, will be punished strictly without exceptions, Trong said, noting that it is essential to address weaknesses in personnel work, and supervise and control power to prevent corruption.

According to a report delivered by Phan Dinh Trac, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, head of the CPV Central Committee’s Commission for Internal Affairs and deputy head of the Central Steering Committee on Anti-Corruption, since the previous conference in 2014, especially since the Party’s 12th National Congress in January 2016, anti-corruption work has been implemented well, resulting in many achievements.
Since 2014, disciplinary measures have been applied on 840 Party organizations and 58,120 Party members, of whom, 2,720 violated anti-corruption regulations.
Since the beginning of 2016, 490 Party organizations and 35,000 Party members have been punished, including 1,300 Party members involved in corruption.
Notably, 50 centrally-managed officials, including nine members or former members of the Party Central Committee, were imposed disciplinary measures. Among them, Dinh La Thang, a member of the Party Central Committee and former member of the Politburo, was expelled from the Party.
Over the years, many serious corruption and economic cases were brought to light and handled in accordance with the law without any exceptions.
Outstanding cases included those involving Vu Quoc Hao, Vu Viet Hung, Duong Chi Dung, Huynh Thi Huyen Nhu, Nguyen Duc Kien, Le Dung, Chau Thi Thu Nga, Giang Kim Dat, Trinh Xuan Thanh, Pham Cong Danh, Ha Van Tham, Phan Van Anh Vu, Dinh Ngoc He and the massive gambling case in Phu Tho and some other localities.
The results have been lauded by the community and recognized by international organizations. Agencies have openly provided information on the cases to the public and the media, thus promoting the role of the press in anti-corruption, stated the report.
Outcomes in anti-corruption work have helped purify the Party and State organization and the political system, while reinforcing confidence of Party members and people, creating new momentum for the successful implementation of the Party National Congress’ resolution, the report added.
Some delegates at the conference shared the view that the Party should continue enhancing its leadership over anti-corruption work while legal regulations on economic management need to be further amended and supplemented.
“The long-term fight still faces many complicated difficulties and challenges. I hope that after this conference, new and stronger, more drastic and effective changes will be made,” stated the Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong.
