Ambassador: Vietnamese catfish export uninterrupted despite US tax hike
Higher duties recently slapped on Vietnamese catfish hasn`t prevent Vietnam`s export from accessing the US market, affirmed US Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel Kritenbrink at a press briefing on March 26.
The US Department of Commerce (USDOC) on March has announced a record high anti-dumping duties on catfish imports from Vietnamese companies. Accordingly, Vietnamese catfish exporters will be subjected to anti-dumping tariffs of US$2.39 - US$7.74 per kilo, a 5.61-fold increase.
The decision is part of US’s regular and periodic review on imports into the country, including catfish fillets, said Kritenbrink, adding that it has not interrupted Vietnam’s catfish export to the US. “Vietnamese exporters have full access to the US market”, noted the Ambassador.
According to Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the total export value of Vietnam's catfish in January reached US$172.5 million, a year-on-year increase of 43.7%
The US ambassador also believes in the future striving trade tie of Vietnam and the US, which saw a 12,000-fold jump during the past two decade and two-way trade worth nearly US$52 billion. “The trade cooperation between Vietnam and the US is vital”, he said, highlighting that numerous American enterprises are investing in Vietnam. However, they faces challenges, which is expected to be tackled by Vietnam government soon and effectively. “We expect a transparent and open business environment in Vietnam, where local and foreign firms are treated fairly”, enthused the diplomat.
