3,400 runners to compete in Vietnam Mountain Marathon
The organizing board hoped to welcome more than runners from Vietnam and around the world.
Some 3,400 runners from 54 countries will compete in the 2018 Vietnam Mountain Marathon, which is organized by Topas Travel and will take place in Sapa, Lao Cai province from September 22 to 23.
All runners will race distances ranging from 10 to 100km in Sapa, Lao Cai province. The race will kick off with an expo in Sapa Square on Friday September 21 with live music, talks by experts.
The 100km race will begin at 10pm on September 21, with the participants running through the night up some of the highest peaks in Vietnam.
On September 22, the runners in the 70km, 42km and 21km contests will join them for a race through spectacular rice terraces and ethnic minority villages. The race finish line is the Topas Ecolodge. In 2017, National Geographic, a US magazine named Topas Ecolodge the number one place to stay if you care about the environment.
Founded in 2013, the event is one of the biggest ultra-marathon events in Asia and a landmark event in Southeast Asia. In the first season, the event only attracted a small group from Vietnam, but in this year’s event they account for over half of the participating runners.
In 2018, over US$38,000 will be donated to local projects operated by Operation Smile and Newborns Vietnam to help support health amongst newborn babies.
Earlier, leading neonatologists from the UK opened a training course for doctors and nurses at Lao Cai Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital in partnership with the Newborns Vietnam and the National Hospital of Pediatrics. The training course was financially supported by the Vietnam Mountain Marathon to promote safe newborn care in Lao Cai province.
