WB to assist Hanoi in public transport and water drainage
The World Bank is ready to extend assistance to Hanoi in developing its public transport and water drainage systems, according to World Bank Country Director for Vietnam Ousmane Dione after a meeting with Hanoi’s Mayor Nguyen Duc Chung on March 12.
Specifically, the World Bank would join hands with Hanoi to develop the public transport system and water drainage planning until 2030, according to Dione.
In the past, WB offered technical assistance for analyzing and rating the mass transport system of Hanoi. This allowed the city to adopt more effective transport management and planning. WB’s support also encouraged the private sector to invest in transport projects under the PPP model.
Dione explained that the bank mobilized US$550,000 for assessing the public transport system while WB experts would promptly work with Hanoi in conducting the program. Citing the Hanoi’s speedy development and urbanization, Dione believes the city faces grave risks from air and water pollution. Hence, environment protection plays a key role in the city's efforts toward sustainable development.
WB also offered to support the city in planning the drainage system from now to 2030, and to realize its vision by 2050.
Accordingly, World Bank would offer technical support in cleaning lakes, rivers and channels to enhance water quality, build flood-avoidance schemes, solve the sewage problem at Nhue River, districts of Long Bien, Gia Lam as well as mobilize the technology and private-public partnership investment to optimize activities.
For his part, Chung agreed with the suggestions from the WB official and pointed out that in 2017, Hanoi cleaned 83 of 124 lakes in the city as well as collaborated with German firms to solve water pollution according to Hanoi’s specific conditions.
The Mayor also asked the WB to support the city's move to separate sewage and water for households through financing and technology so that Hanoi can become a more livable city.
