Vietnam's universities determine to attract more foreign students
On the sidelines of the forum on Vietnam - ASEAN policy dialogue to enhance the movement of students held from June 8-9 in Hanoi, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Bui Van Ga said Vietnam is making efforts to attract foreign students.
Deputy Minister Bui Van Ga said that at present, the number of Vietnamese students studying abroad is 130,000 arrivals, while only 20,000 foreign students come Vietnam to study.
As a result of this disparity, Vietnam is trying its best efforts to attract more and more foreign students come to study, especially ASEAN bloc, he added.
According to the deputy minister, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) has prepared 34 advanced programmes in some elite universities, including the Viet Duc (Germany-Vietnam), Viet Nhat (Japan-Vietnam), Viet Phap (France-Vietnam) International Universities and the Vietnam Britain Institute for Research and Training. Studies will be conducted in English.
He said that a project of European Union Support for Higher Education in the ASEAN region was also launched in mid-May to assist the movement of students among the ASEAN nations, especially when the ASEAN Economic Community has formed.
The Ministry of Education and Training is comleting the draft for submission to the Prime Minister to be approved the National Qualification Framework (to make it equivalent to those of other ASEAN nations).
The Deputy Minister also expressed his hope that when the National Qualification Framework is approved, it will make the student exchanges among ASEAN member states more accessible.
The National Qualification Framework, that is based on the European reference framework, means all countries having the same level frame on the knowledge skills and accountability for the work.
Deputy Minister Ga noted that since 2010 the MOET has focused efforts on improving foreign language teaching programmes in general schools and in tertiary education, as well as preparing the conditions for ASEAN and international integration.
While waiting for the National Qualification Framework to be approved, the MOET has distributed to universities the standards of the European Union as a reference for tertiary education in Vietnam, Ga said.
Vietnamese students currently have trained not only focusing the target of the domestic labour market, according to the deputy minister.
He also underlined that in the past time, Vietnam's universities have trained their students towards the world's new tend providing the basic knowledge to students in order to adapt to different tasks after graduated.
