Vietnam's former capital welcomes 1.73 million visitors YTD
In the first four months of 2019, Thua Thien-Hue’s tourism sector earned more than VND1.51 trillion (US$65.19 million).
Thua Thien-Hue province welcomed 1.73 million visitors in the first four months of 2019, including 847,700 foreigners, representing an increase of 11% from the same period last year, Vietnam News Agency reported, citing the provincial Department of Tourism.
Visitors from South Korea accounted for 29.3% of the foreign arrivals, being the largest source of tourists to Thua Thien-Hue province. The next major sources were France, the US, the UK and Thailand.
In the first four months of 2019, Thua Thien-Hue’s tourism sector earned more than VND1.51 trillion (US$65.19 million). Notably, as many as 58,500 foreign tourists visit the province by sea, representing a year-on-year rise of 33.2%.
In addition, during the 2019 Hue Traditional Craft Festival, which lasted from April 26 to May 2 and coincided with the National Reunification Day and May Day holidays, the number of visitors to Thua Thien-Hue reached an estimated 550,000, including 81,000 foreigners, a 23% increase year on year.
The average occupancy rate at local hotels exceeded 75% before and after the holidays. In particular, from April 27 to 30, not a single room at 3-5 star hotels was left vacant.
Thue Thien - Hue was the country's capital in more than a century from the beginning of the 19th century. It is home to a wide range of tourist attractions such as the Imperial Citadel, the Perfume River and famous for traditional cuisine.
Deputy Director of Thua Thien-Hue's Department of Tourism Nguyen Van Phuc said that as the peak time of the holiday season is coming, the province is working with University of Foreign Languages – Hue University to organize courses of South Korean language and tourism skills for more than 52 pedicab drivers in the province.
In 2019, Thua Thien-Hue province is expected to welcome 4.5 - 4.7 million holidaymakers, up nearly 8% annually, 40 – 45% of them will be foreigners. Thua Thien-Hue’s tourism revenue is expected to rise by nearly 10% to VND4.7 – 4.9 trillion (US$204 – 213 million).
