Vietnam’s airports serve 43.3 million passengers in Jan-May

Vietnam’s airports welcomed a total of 43.3 million passengers and handled more than 603,000 tons of cargoes in the first five months of 2018.
In which, the total, domestic carriers transported 20.4 million passengers and 487,000 tons of cargoes, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV).

As of May 15, the number of planes registered with Vietnamese nationality were 174, increasing five compared with the figure at the end of 2017 and 18 in comparison with the same period last year.
Of the sum, national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines owns the biggest fleet, with 91 aircraft, followed by Vietjet Air with 54 planes and Jetstar Pacific 17 planes.
In 2017, Vietnam’s airports served over 94 million passengers, including nearly 13 million foreigners. The number of passengers has surged 17 times from two decades ago to the all-time high in 2017, according to CAAV.
Airports across Vietnam accommodated more than 800,000 safe flights, up 10% from 2016, operated by 67 foreign carriers and four Vietnamese ones in 2017.
The Van Don International Airport in Quang Ninh province is scheduled to receve the first flight in December 2018.
The local authority will submit to PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc for approval on the plan allowing the airport to start opeation in July, according to Sun Group, the investor.  This is the first ever airport in the country built by a private investor.
Construction on the airport started in 2015 with total investment of VND7.5 trillion (US$330 million).
Van Don airport is hoped to facilitate travelling to Quang Ninh, home to the World Heritage site of Ha Long Bay. It is also expected to boost local development, as Van Don district is designated to be one of the first three special administrative-economic units in Vietnam.
