Vietnam, US share views on regional peace maintenance

Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue is on a three-day trip to the US starting June 25, aiming to strengthen Vietnam-US ties in a number of fields.
Vietnam and the United State pledge to share the mutual interests on the maintenance of peace and stability in the India-Asia-Pacific region, Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in statement to reporters, citing talks in Washington on June 25 between Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Amid current complex situation, the two officials agreed on the settlement of disputes through peaceful means in line with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), and working towards a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).

At the meetings with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his deputy John Sullivan, the Vietnamese official affirmed Vietnam’s consistent foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation and development; multilateralization and diversification of external relations. Vietnam respects and is willing to reinforce the Comprehensive Partnership between the US and Vietnam for the sake of the two nations’ people, contributing to the peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and worldwide.

For his part, Secretary Mike Pompeo highlighted the friendship and comprehensive partnership between the US and Vietnam. He agreed with Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue that the two nations should cooperate and enhance the bilateral ties basing on consented principles, while hailing the dynamic development, role and position of Vietnam in the region.

Both sides discussed on measures to boost the bilateral Comprehensive Partnership. The US official spoke highly of a strong, independent, prosperous Vietnam and is willing to shake hands with the country in numerous areas of mutual concern. Both sides agreed to increasingly exchange high-ranking delegations to boost the ties of trade, investment, energy, national defense-security, and war aftermath handling.

Vuong Dinh Hue is on a three-day official visit to the United States starting June 25 during which is scheduled to meet with top American officials to deal with achy issues between the two countries.

His trip aims to maintain and enhance the two countries’ diplomatic relations, affirming Vietnam’s wish to accelerate cooperation with the US within the bilateral Comprehensive Partnership. The visit also looks to seek ways to promote bilateral economic, trade and investment ties on the basis of mutual interests.

Within the trip, Hue is also set to meet with US Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan; US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin; US Deputy National Security Advisor Mira Ricardel and Senator Mazie Hirono.
