Vietnam tops medal table after first competition day of ABG5

On the first day of competition at the fifth Asian Beach Games (ABG 5) in the central city of Da Nang, Phan Thi Phuong won the first gold medal for Vietnam in the women’s Fairway single event of Beach Woodball.

At the ongoing 5th Asian Beach Games (ABG 5) in the central city of Da Nang, the first gold medal was won by Phan Thi Phuong in the women’s Fairway single event of Beach Woodball. In the final match, Phuong beat her teammate Nguyen Huyen Trang 3-0. 
This is an improvement from Phuong’s achievement two years ago when she bagged a silver in the 4th ABG, which was organised in Phuket, Thailand.
In addition, Vietnam also had a bronze medal in Woodball by Nguyen Hong Quan, making it the best team in the sports, followed by Thailand and Indonesia.

Vietnamese athletes won two other gold medals, including Hoang Thi Tinh in the women’s 48kg and Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy in the women’s 52kg of Kurash.
Vietnamese athletes won three gold, four silver and 11 bronze medals on the first day of the competition helping the host country top the medal tally.

The ABG5, themed “Shining Sea, Bright Future,”, saw the participation of about 4,600 coaches and athletes from 45 countries and territories worldwide, who are competing in 14 sports with 22 events for 165 medal sets.

The ABG initiated by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and held every two years with the first edition in Bali, Indonesia, in 2008, is one of the largest sports events in Asia.
The ABG5 aims to introduce Vietnam to international friends as a beautiful, hospitable and united nation which is looking towards a bright future.

The Vietnamese athletes will show off their skills at all sports, targeting to lead the tournament. Vietnam ranked fourth with eight gold, 12 silver and 20 bronze medals in the fourth Asian Beach Games, which took place in Phuket, Thailand in 2014.
The event offers a chance for Vietnam to develop beach games while helping Da Nang city promote its tourism.
Up to 3,000 hotel rooms in Da Nang are available for participating officials and athletes. The city has organised various cultural and culinary festivals, along with launching special tours on this occasion.
The closing ceremony of the ABG5 is scheduled to take plalce on October 3.
