Vietnam to support providing legal papers for the people of Vietnamese origin in Cambodia
Vietnam hopes Cambodia will continue to provide favorable legal conditions and take appropriate measures to guarantee the legal and legitimate rights of ethnic Vietnamese in Cambodia, said Spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, Le Thi Thu Hang.
Earlier, Cambodian media reported that country officials promised to grant short-term residency cards to roughly 70,000 ethnic Vietnamese currently facing deportation to Vietnam, where they have no legal status either.
Replying to reporters’ questions on the issue, the spokesperson of the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry, affirmed on Thursday that Vietnam hopes that Cambodia would facilitate and ensure the legitimate rights and benefits of these people of Vietnamese origin. “Vietnam’s representative agencies in Cambodia are working with the related functional units to support this community in gaining legal documents and earning stable lives,” stated Hang.
Last year, the Cambodian Ministry of Home Affairs announced a plan to revoke all the “improperly issued” identification documents of 70,000 people, most of whom came from Vietnam, cited The Phnompenh Post.
Sok Phal, Head of the Immigration General Office (Ministry of Home Affairs), affirmed 7,501 individuals with improperly and mistakenly issued birth certifications. Phal also ruled out deportation and denationalization of the people in question, saying they can contact the authorities to see whether they can become legal immigrants due to the amount of time they have lived in Cambodia.
