Vietnam to operate a system of 23 airports by 2020

By 2020, Vietnam will operate a network of 23 airports, including 13 domestic and 10 international facilities. By 2030, the Vietnamese air transport market will be in the top four in the ASEAN in terms of transport volume.
Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung has just signed Decision 236/QD-TTg, approving the readjustment of transport development planning to 2020, with orientation to 2030.

Accordingly, by 2030, the Vietnamese air transport market will be among the top four ASEAN countries in terms of transport volume. The aircraft fleet will be developed in the direction of applying modern technology and techniques. The airport system will be developed to meet the increasing transportation demand. Additionally, 3 regional passenger and cargo transportation centers will be formed on the ASEAN level.

The Aviation Department has recently announced that the total passenger transport market will increase by an average of 16% per year from 2015 to 2020 and 8% per year from 2020 to 2030. The total transport market will increase by an average of 18% per year from 2015 to 2020 and 12% per year from 2020 to 2030.

Vietnam Airlines to play key role

With regards to aviation businesses, by 2020, the government will step up the restructuring of state enterprises and create favorable conditions for enterprises to participate in the segment.

In particular, continuing to develop Vietnam Airlines will be the key for international air transport development, boosting the country’s competitiveness within the ASEAN. The government will also create favorable conditions for Vietnamese airlines to jointly develop and promote the domestic and international passenger transport market. They will also develop air transport enterprises to meet the needs of the market and the requirements of air transport businesses.

Additionally, Vietnam will renovate and raise the operational efficiency of Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation and ensure the management and provision of flight control services in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in accordance with the ICAO standards.
