Pham Ngoc Minh, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army, launched a Gepard 3.9 class frigate in Russia on April 27.
Having a displacement of nearly 2,200 tonnes, the ship is fully armed for anti-submarine, anti-surface and anti-aircraft roles.
It was built under a contract signed in September 2013 between the Vietnam People’s Navy and the Gorky shipbuilding yard in Zelenodolsk, Russia, as part of Vietnam-Russia military cooperation. The plant had previously completed two ships of this kind for Vietnam.
The launch ceremony saw the attendance of Prime Minister Ildar Khalikov of the Republic of Tatarstan, a federal subject of Russia.
