Once completed, the plant is expected to supply around 80 million kWh of electricity for the national power grid annually.
Vietnam's Quang Dien Binh Thuan Investment Company on September 23 started construction of the 39-megawatt (MW) Song Luy 1 solar power plant in the central province of Binh Thuan, at a cost of VND998 billion (US$42.7 million), the government portal reported.

Under the approval of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT), the project covers an area of 45.5 hectares in Song Luy commune, Bac Binh district and is expected to supply around 80 million kWh of electricity to the national power grid annually.

The plant is scheduled to be put into operation by April 2019, which is a major step towards realizing Binh Thuan's energy development plan.

Thanks to its natural characteristics, Binh Thuan is an ideal place to construct solar power plants, said Tran The Thanh, chairman of Quang Dien Binh Thuan Investment Company.

A number of international consultants and suppliers took part in the project, including Sigma Energy (Spain), Tractebel (Belgium), ABB (Sweden) and TMEIC (Japan).

Overall, Binh Thuan province has a total of 14 solar power plant projects with investment capital of VND20.7 trillion (US$885.63 million). According to the development plan of the province, up to 2030, the total capacity of solar power plants would be over 4,000 MW.

Under Vietnam's master plan, solar power is expected to become the main new renewable energy source in the future in Vietnam, with installed capacity to be increased from around six to seven megawatts at the end of 2017 to 850MW by 2020, accounting for 1.6% of the country's power generation and 12,000MW by 2030 or 3.3% of Vietnam's power generation.
