Vietnam demands China to withdraw oil rig 981 from the mouth of Gulf of Tonkin
On January 19, Foreign Ministry`s Spokesman Le Hai Binh stated that Vietnam is concerned and asks China to withdraw oil rig Hai Duong 981 from the mouth of Gulf of Tonkin.

On January 18, a representative of the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry met with counterpart of the Chinese Embassy in Ha Noi to point out Viet Nam’s concern over China’s movement of the oil rig to the aforesaid location-the overlapping area that has not been delimited by the two countries. Viet Nam demanded China stop the operation of the oil rig there and withdraw the oil rig away from this area.
Viet Nam also reserves its all legal rights and interests over the area in accordance with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and relevant international practices.
