This is the first move of Vietnam Airlines to explore the Vietnam – US aviation market as well as promote outbound travelers to the US using flights operated by Vietnam Airlines.

Previously, Vietnam Airlines had signed a one-way codeshare partnership with Delta Air Lines in 2010 to jointly operate ten inbound and outbound flights to the US and 10 domestic flights in the US.

Thanks to this agreement, Vietnam Airlines’ passengers may fly to eight states of the US via connecting flights operated by Delta Air Lines at Tokyo or Frankfurt (Germany).

The cooperation between the two air carriers is considered a new advance since the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam was granted a certificate of Category 1 aviation safety rating (CAT1) by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Accordingly, both the Vietnamese and US carriers will check their operating system this September. Delta Air Lines will start to sell tickets for the Hanoi – Tokyo (Japan) route operated by Vietnam Airlines for passengers who fly to the US.

In 2018, the number of inbound and outbound air travelers between Vietnam and the US were 757,000, up 8% against 2017. Currently, there are no direct flights between Vietnam and the US.

Last year, Vietnam Airlines and Delta Airlines recorded nearly 18,000 passengers using the code share flights of both carriers, most of them traveled to Vietnam from the US.
