The Hanoitimes - Deputy PM Nguyen Thien Nhan made the statement on March 18 at the opening ceremony of the 4th ASEAN Forum on Reduce, Reuse and Recycle  (3R) in Ha Noi.

Under the theme ‘3Rs in the context of our efforts towards the achievement of Rio+20 results – the Future We Want’, the Forum is a significance move towards a green economy through the promotion of more effective measures for waste management and reduction of impacts on the environment, described Deputy PM Nhan.

The host leader also pointed out that the environment in various regions of the world, including several Asian countries, continues to be contaminated due to rapid increase of waste.

“We need to re-consider our past growth model so as to find a novel direction, a novel development pattern and address these issues in the best manner,” said Deputy PM Nhan.

Over the past time, Viet Nam has adopted the National Strategy for Green Growth, in which the main tasks include reducing the intensity of GHG emission, fostering green production and developing sustainable lifestyles.  “Especially, one of the solutions emphasized in Viet Nam’s Green Growth Strategy is strengthened re-use and recycle of waste through improved policies, legal systems, planning and development of waste recycling industry, promoting recycling by converting waste into energy, materials and compost”, emphasized the Deputy PM.

In order to realize 3Rs and measures for green economy, according to Deputy PM Nhan, it is essential that we enhance cooperation among countries at the global as well as Asian regional scale.

He also asserted that Viet Nam always highly appreciates and supports Asian Forum on 3Rs initiated by Japan Environment Ministry and the UN Centre for Regional Development.

He expressed his confidence that the Forum will be opportunity for us to share and exchange practical experiences, technologies and policy instruments to promote 3Rs, and through the Forum, Asian countries will foster high-level policy dialogues in the direction of sustainable development in the region.
