Three International filmmakers become the jury at the 20th Vietnam Film Festival

Three International filmmakers, including Jonathan Hyong-Joon Kim, Roger Garcia and Karolina Bielawska have been invited to participate in the jury of the ASEAN Film Awards at the 20th Vietnam Film Festival.

South Korea’s film producer Jonathan Hyong-Joon Kim (born 1960) is a South Korean film producer. He has produced five of the country's top 50 highest grossing films of all time including Silmido, the first film to surpass 10 million domestic ticket sales. He has received the Daejong Award for Best Picture and Best Executive Producer.
His 16 produced films include the critically acclaimed Lies, Ditto, To Catch a Virgin Ghost (South Korea's most profitable film of 2004), and the 2007 joint South Korean–Japanese production Virgin Snow. He recently completed his term as the chairman of the Korean Film Producers Association. He also served as a mentor for the first two years of the Korean Film Council Filmmaker Development Lab.
In which, Roger Garcia has been the Executive Director of the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society since 2010 where he is responsible for the international film festival, Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum, and the Asian Film Awards Academy.
Garcia served as Administrative Officer in the Hong Kong Government where his various postings included policy, management and planning for cultural services including cultural centres and museums, the Academy for Performing Arts, the Hong Kong International Film Festival, subventions to performing arts groups, and policy reports on performing arts, visual arts and film archive in Hong Kong.
After Government service, Garcia produced studio pictures in Hollywood, independent films in Asia, and created the first US programme on Asian cinema for Comcast cable TV, and conducted script development workshops for the Korean Film Council (KOFIC). He has been jury member, consultant, programmer, and adviser to many international film festivals in Asia, Europe and the United States including Berlin, Hong Kong, Locarno, Manila, Pucheon, San Francisco, Torino, and Udine Far East Film Festival.

Meanwhile, Karolina Bielawska is a director and scriptwriter, born in 1978 in Warsaw. She wrote Call Me Marianna, a subtly narrated documentary about a woman in the process of finalizing her sex-change operation. Karolina Bielawska graduated in directing from the Krzysztof Kieślowski Radio and Television Faculty of the University of Silesia in Katowice, and from the Development Lab Feature Programme at the Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing in Warsaw, Poland. Her student short films and documentaries have been shown and awarded at major film festivals in Poland and abroad.
Her film The End of Summer has won the Golden Cat award for the Best Film at the International Izmir Short Film Festival in 2007, and the Gold Medal of the Union Internationale du Cinema at the World Independent Film Festival UNICA in Tunisia (2008).
The three filmmakers have participated in or served as jurors for many large film festivals around the world such as the World Premieres Film Festival of Philippines, Shanghai International Film Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival, Krakow Film Festival, Chicago Film Festival, and Los Angeles Film Festival.
The 20th Vietnam Film Festival will be held in Da Nang from November 24 to 28. The film fest aims to honor local cinematographic works featuring traditional characteristics, humanity and creativity, and pay tribute to movie makers and artists who have made outstanding contributions to the national movie industry.
This year’s event themed “Building a modern human movie industry” will include activities such as free outdoor screenings, Vietnamese film week, seminars on the ASEAN film industry and development of the Vietnamese movie sector, an exhibition on Vietnamese cinema, and exchanges between actors, directors, producers and audiences.
