Spring festivals and tourist attractions nationwide lure numerous visitors
Hanoi’s tourist attractions such as Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam (Temple of Literature), Ngoc Son Temple, Hoa Lo Prison historical relic site, Dong Da festival and Huong Pagoda Festival 2017 drew thousands of people nationwide during the Lunar New Year running from January 26 to February 2.
Dong Da festival in Hanoi was organised on February 1 (the fifth day of the first lunar month) to mark the 228th anniversary of Ngoc Hoi – Dong Da victory over the Chinese Qing invaders.
Prime Minister (PM) Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Hanoi’s leaders attended the opening of the Dong Da festival.
Tens of thousands from throughout the nation also gathered for the Dong Da festival.
The festival opened with incense offering by PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung, Permanent Deputy of the municipal Party Committee Ngo Thi Thanh Hang and other senior officials in remembrance of King Quang Trung (also known as Nguyen Hue) and the Tay Son soldiers who defeated 290,000 Chinese Qing invaders in 1789.
Addressing the event, Chairman of the Dong Da district People’s Committee Nguyen Song Hao recalled that on this day 228 years ago, Tay Son troops led by Nguyen Hue (later proclaimed Emperor Quang Trung) launched a surprise attack and defeated more than 290,000 Qing invading soldiers right at the park.
Since then, the fifth day of the lunar first month has become an annual traditional day of historic significance to people nationwide, he said.
A series of cultural, artistic, and sporting activities took place during Dong Da festival, including martial art performances, Chinese chess, and human chess to vividly re-enact the glorious victory of Ngoc Hoi-Dong Da.
According to the report of Hanoi Tourism Department during the 5-day Tet (Lunar New Year) holidays from January 26-30, the number of tourists to the capital city reached over 230,000 arrivals, up 7.5% against the same period in 2016. Hanoi received about 62,670 international tourists, an increase of 15% over the same period of last year.
During the reviewed time, the Temple of Literature welcomed nearly 200,000 visitors.
From the first to the third day of the first lunar month, the Hoa Lo Prison historical relic site received as many 2,334 tourists, including 369 domestic passengers and 1,965 international visitors.
Particularly, Soc Temple Festival and Huong Pagoda Festival 2017 are being held in Hanoi city on February 2.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hau, Head of the organising board of Huong Pagoda Festival 2017 said that from January 29-February 1, more than 100,000 visitors gathered at the Thien Tru pagoda, Huong Son commmune, My Duc district to join the event.

In the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai from January 29 – February 10, cultural and sport events are also taking place as part of National Tourism Year 2017 Lao Cai - Northwest.
Visitors and locals joined folk games, singing competitions, festivals and enjoyed local cuisine.
Gau Tao festival of the Mong ethnic minorities in the east of Muong Khuong district from January 31- February 2 also attracted tourists.
About ten thousand of people visited the Hung Kings Temples Complex in the northern province of Phu Tho on the Lunar New Year’s Day to pay tribute to the founders of the nation and pray for a happy new year.
Meanwhile, the northeastern province of Quang Ninh served more than 800,000 tourists from January 26-February 1, up about 45 percent from last year, earning in excess of 900 billion VND in revenue.
The number of visitors to local relic sites was estimated at 630,000, predominantly in Yen Tu and Ba Vang pagodas in Uong Bi city, Cua Ong temple, Long Tien and Cai Bau pagodas, Sun Wheel, and Dragon Park.
Tourist numbers to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ha Long Bay surpassed 70,000. On the first day of the Lunar New Year, about 300 vessels carrying 5,000 passengers toured the bay, a 20 percent increase from normal days.
During the holidays, more than 32,000 travelled through Mong Cai international border gate.
