Removing difficulties for urban rail project in Hanoi

​On December 9 afternoon, Chairman of Hanoi People`s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung presided over the meeting on the progress of urban rail project of Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station.

The meeting was attended by the departments, relevant localities and project sponsor representatives from Asian Development Bank (ADB), European Investment Bank and so on.

Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Duc Chung said that due to the weak management and administration, the progress of railway project of Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station has been slowed considerably. Therefore, the MPC has decided to replace the project leader, Nguyen Cao Minh, with experience in implementing and managing large projects while still working at the Ministry of Transport, to be appointed as Head of Project Management.

At the meeting, Head of Hanoi Urban Railway Nguyen Cao Minh reported the partners on the progress of project implementation. Currently, 7 among 9 construction packages of major equipment projects has selected the tender.

Deputy Director of ADB in Vietnam Norio Saito said he highly appreciates the progress of the project that has considerable completion, but the project sponsor still remains some concerns.

Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Duc Chung has replied each specific issues that the sponsor has mentioned. Chairman Chung pledged to do his best to accelerate the progress of the project and address existing difficulties. On behaft of the Capital's authority and people, Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung expressed his gratitute for the French government and the donors that have cooperated with Hanoi in the process of project implementation.

** The same day, during a meeting with Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen The Hung in Hanoi, leader of the WB’s Program for Sustainable Development Madhu Raghunath said the World Bank will fund a project to develop an air-monitoring system worth 500,000 USD in Hanoi, and Hanoi is one of seven cities across the world chosen to pilot the project.

The project aims to evaluate air quality, identify polluted areas and build capacity for technical staff involved in the work. Hung expressed hope that the project will help Hanoi plan air-sampling systems in the most effective manner, and develop legal framework tackling air pollution in the city.
