Quang Tri to invest in My Thuy International Seaport
Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung has directed the Ministry of Planning and Investment to guide the Quang Tri People`s Committee on executing the dossier, sequence and procedures for the investment decision on the My Thuy International Seaport construction project in Hai Lang district, Quang Tri province.
Acting on the directive, the Ministry of Planning and Investment will coordinate with the Quang Tri People's Committee and the Ministry of Transport to conduct the appraisal of the My Thuy International Seaport’s project dossier and to report to PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc on what decision to make based on regulatory law.
To boost socio-economic development, the People’s Committee of Quang Tri Province wants the construction of the Quang Tri Province Southeast Economic Zone, where the My Thuy International Seaport would be the International trading gateway, to enhance the cargo import and export capability of Quang Tri Province and the areas on the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC).
Once completed, My Thuy International Seaport will shorten the distance for cargo transportation, creating favorable conditions for major areas on the East-West Economic Corridor to develop. It will also facilitate import and export activities in Quang Tri Province.
My Thuy International Seaport comes closer to completion through the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Rich & Wise JSC and the investor My Thuy International Port Joint Venture Company (MTIP). The project will be constructed in three stages with the total investment capital of US$637 million. The first phase (US$230 million) is slated to be completed in 2018 - 2025. According to design, the 17.5-metres deep port will be able to accommodate vessels of 100,000 deadweight tonnes (DWT) by 2036.
The volume of goods shipped via My Thuy International Seaport is estimated to be 18.36 million tonnes by 2020 and 35.75 million tonnes by 2030, much higher than the 1.1 million and 1.5 million tonnes projected in the detailed planning for ports of the central region, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
Vietnam has 49 seaports, including 10 large-scale ports: Hai Phong port (Hai Phong city); Vung Tau port (Ba Ria – Vung Tau); Van Phong seaport (Khanh Hoa province); Quy Nhon seaport (Binh Dinh province); Quang Ninh seaport (Quang Ninh province); Sai Gon seaport (Ho Chi Minh city), all of which serve to accelerate the country’s economic development and international integration process, according to the Ministry of Transport.
