Portuguese Assembly supports Vietnam in East Sea stance
14:02, 2014/06/27
Portuguese officials voiced their support for Vietnam’s struggle for justice and peaceful settlement of East Sea disputes.
A National Assembly (NA) delegation led by NA Vice Chairman Uong Chu Luu paid a working visit to Portugal on June 26 at the invitation of the Speaker of the Portuguese Parliament.

Meeting with Portuguese legislators, the two sides also shared executive experiences and examined ways to boost stronger cooperation between the two legislatures.
Luu also informed them on Vietnam’s tremendous renewal achievements in socio-economic development and national security and defence.
“Vietnam consistently pursues a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, cooperation and development; multilateralism and diversification of relations, proactive international integration, being a reliable partner and responsible member of the international community,” the Vietnamese Vice NA Chairman said.
Luu expressed his delight at steady growth of two-way trade turnover over the past years in spite of remaining at a modest figure. Last year’s bilateral trade reached US$ 279 million double the level recorded a year earlier (US$165 million).
Portugal now has an honorary consul in Vietnam, however, bilateral cooperation is still far from matching the two sides’ full potential.
Luu noted with satisfaction over the signing a number of cooperation agreements on double taxation avoidance, investment encouragement and protection, and tourism and technology,  providing a legal framework for bolstering wider economic, trade investment cooperation in the future.
The Vietnamese legislator also commended two countries’ cooperation at forums, and international organizations, saying that both sides have similar views on many international issues such as non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, climate change response, ASEAN-EU cooperation.
Luu suggested Portugal support Vietnam in strengthening ties with EU countries including the early ratification Vietnam-EU Partnership Cooperation Agreement (PCA), signing of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EUVFTA) and recognition of Vietnam’s full market economy.
Luu also briefed his guests about the East Sea tensions after China illegally placed the drilling rig Haiyang Shiyou-981 in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.  He said China’s wrongdoings are threatening regional peace, security and freedom of navigation. Luu thanked the Government of Portugal for backing the EU statement on this issue.
Portuguese officials, in turn, voiced their support for Vietnam’s struggle for justice and peaceful settlement of East Sea disputes.
On this occasion, NA Vice Chairman Luu invited Vice President of the Portuguese Assembly Antonio Filipe Portugal to visit Vietnam in the near future and conveyed an invitation from NA Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung to the President of the Portuguese Parliament to attend the 132nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU-132) slated for March next year.
