“China must respect PCA’s ruling”, “Peace and Security for East Sea” were among the banners held aloft by Overseas Vietnamese in Germany during a meeting in front of the Chinese Embassy in Berlin on July 23. The event drew the participation of hundreds of Vietnamese expats, representatives from Vietnamese organisations in Germany as well as Philippine and other international friends.
Le Hong Cuong-head of the organising board, briefed the participants about the main contents and historical significance of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA)’s ruling on the Philippines’ lawsuit against China’s claims in the East Sea.
He noted that the ruling said that China’s claims for “historic rights” over waters within the so-called nine-dash line in the East Sea run counter to the 1982 United Nation Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982) and China has no historic title over the waters in the East Sea.

Cuong also informed the audiences about the response of international community and public opinion in Germany to the ruling. He read a statement of the community of Vietnamese, Philippine and international friends in Germany, which called on the world and international organisations to urge China to obey international law and the PCA’s verdict on July 12.
He expressed his hope that all relevant parties will observe the ruling, and not hinder the freedom of navigation in and overflight well as oil and gas exploration and trade activities in the East Sea. He suggested that ASEAN should hold a meeting to ask China to join dialogue, thus reaching a common approach.
Meanwhile, a number of political parties, civil organisations and the community in Mexico have voiced their support to the court’s ruling, considering it a right decision that brings about justice to countries in their struggle for their legitimate sovereignty. He asked all parties, especially China to respect the ruling.

On behalf of the demonstration, Chairman of the association of Ly Hoa Son family’s descendants Ly Thua Vinh read a statement of the Vietnamese community in the RoK, which affirms Vietnam’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos and raises objections to China’s recent illegal acts in the East Sea which violated Vietnam’s sovereignty and sovereign rights, threatened marine, aviation safety and regional security as well as infringed international laws.
The statement lauds the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA)’s ruling on July 12, which rejected China’s claims for historic rights over waters within the so-called nine-dash line in the East Sea. Besides, it requests that China abide by international laws, including the UNCLOS 1982 and the Declaration of the Conduct of the Parties in the East Sea (DOC).
