Japan vessels dock at Danang port

More and more Japanese warships have visited Vietnam over the past years as part of the Vietnam-Japan multifaceted partnership .
Two Japanese training vessel JS Setoyuki and JS Shimayuki have docked at Tien Sa Port in Vietnam’s central city of Danang for a four-day visit beginning March 6.

Led by Colonel Nakagama Yoshiyuki, the two ships of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force have brought 390 officers and sailors, according to VnExpress.

During their stay in Danang, the Japanese delegation will visit a Vietnamese naval vessel, join a volleyball match and perform music with their Vietnamese counterparts, meet with Vietnam’s Naval Region 3 Command, which is in charge of ensuring peace and stability in waters off Vietnam’s north-central coast.

They crewmen will also meet with Danang authorities, and take a city tour.

Hatsuyuki-class JS Setoyuki (TV-3518) and JS Shimayuki (TV-3513), 130 meters long and 13.6 meters wide, were built originally as destroyers. They were turned into training vessels in 2012 and 1999, respectively.

Local media reported that the visit of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s ships aims to realize issues reached between Vietnam and Japan’s top leaders over the past time. And the move is part of efforts to promote bilateral defense ties. 

More and more Japanese warships have visited Vietnam over the past years following the exchange visits paid by the two countries’ senior officials.

On September 17, 2018, KUROSHIO destroyer docked at Cam Ranh international port in Vietnam’s central province of Khanh Hoa for a four-day visit after a joint patrol with the US Navy in the South China Sea.

On July 24, 2018, KOJIMA patrol vessel with 80 crew aboard anchored at Tien Sa port in Danang city. 

On June 13, 2017, ECHIGO vessel carrying 85 officers and sailors moored at Tien Sa port. 

On April 11, 2017, FUYUZUKI destroyer equipped with advanced weapons visited Cam Rank port. 

Vietnam and Japan pledged to reinforce a deep and comprehensive multifaceted relationship, affirming the partnership during the visit paid by incumbent Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc to Tokyo in June 2017.

In a latest move, Sen. Lieut. General Phan Van Giang, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army and First Deputy Defence Minister visited Japan on March 2-5, 2019 at the invitation of Admiral Katsutoshi Kawano, chief of staff of Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF).

Earlier on January 7, 2019, General Yoshinari Marumo, chief of staff of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) visited Vietnam. The JASDF has support Vietnam in capacity enhancement for the Vietnamese Air Defense – Air Force Service.
