Institute celebrates 100 successful stem cell transplants
09:04, 2014/04/24
The National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT) held a ceremony on April 23 to mark over 100 successful haematopoietic stem cell transplants (HSCTs) conducted by its experts.
The institute said it has successfully conducted 107 HSCTs since its first transplant in June 2006, helping save patients with life-threatening blood diseases.

Each transplant costs from 200 million VND (over 9,500 USD) to 600 million VND (nearly 26,800 USD). However, patients just have to pay half of the expense, and the rest is covered by insurance.

Director Nguyen Anh Tri said that the method has been widely applied by the institute as it is an effective and money-saving therapy compared to the other forms of treatment favoured in regional countries.

In the coming time, the NIHBT will promote umbilical cord blood banking to store stem cells for future medical use, he added
