Hue to open theatre for traditional local arts
Thua Thien-Hue is planning to build a VND6.9 billion (US$303.600) puppet and traditional art theater this year.

The new theater will be built on an area of 900sq.m on the Nhu Y River, near the Nguyen Sinh Cung-Han Mac Tu intersection of Hue city. The project has 6 components, including a reception area, administrative offices, a traditional display area, a main stage, a hallway, and a technical area.
The new theater will be able to accommodate a maximum of 150 guests at a time and is expected to diversify entertainment activities for local people and tourists by bringing water puppet shows and performances showcasing Hue’s traditional art forms. The puppet and traditional art theater is expected to be put into operation in the second quarter of 2018, contributing to the city’s tourism development.
The total number of tourists visiting Hue in 2017 rose by 16% to 3.8 million, contributing to the local tourism revenue of VND320 billion (US$14 million), according to the province’s Department of Tourism.
In 2018, the provincial tourism sector expects to welcome 4-4.2 million visitors, 40-45% of whom were foreigners, some 10-12% increase against 2017, generating VND4-4.2 trillion (US$176-184.8 million) in revenue.
Water puppetry is a special traditional artform originating from the Vietnamese countryside—a must-see for all foreign visitors. While Indonesia has shadow puppets and Japan has the bunraku theatre with black-clad ninja puppeteers, and the US has the famous Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and the rest of the madcap Muppet gang, water puppetry in Vietnam is an 800-year-old artform, remarked Things Asian Press.
