Ho Chi Minh city sets up Department of Tourism

The Ho Chi Minh city People’s Committee has issued a decision on establishing Department of Tourism of Ho Chi Minh city on the basis of separating the state management function on tourism from the City Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The decision will validate from October 16th.
 
 
Under the decision, the Department of Tourism will be located at 140 Nguyen Dinh Chieu street, precinct 6, district 3.

The city’s Department of Tourism is an organ under the city’s People’s Committee, helping them undertake the state management function on tourism. HCMC is the first locality nationwide to divide the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism into two separated offices.

Earlier, the city had its own Department of Tourism, which was established in August 1993, but it was merged into the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in June 2008.

During the 2006-2013 period, in spite of all the negative impact from the global financial crisis, the city still achieved an impressive growth in tourism. During the period, the average number of foreign tourist to the city increased 10% per annum, tourism turnover rose 27% per annum, contributing 11% to the city’s GDP. The number of domestic tourists surged year on year with an average growth of 20-30% per annum.

The number of foreign tourist to Ho Chi Minh city accounts for 60% of the total foreign tourists to Vietnam. The city’s tourism turnover makes up 47% of the country’s total.
