The city authorities have also proposed, on an experimental basis, to provide a further visa exemption period of up to five years or total exemption for five Western European countries, including Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. This group of visitors have been maintaining a good annual growth rate of 14% in the last two years.
In addition, the Ho Chi Minh City government has proposed that the Ministry of Transport consider the following in the overall transportation infrastructure planning: developing the city into an important transportation hub in the Southeast Asia region; building highways to shorten travelling time between the city and other domestic tour destinations; and investing in the construction of passenger ports for the development of waterway tourism.
The city government also made the following recommendations to ministries: promoting and building the image of Vietnam as a tourism destination; implementing the ASEAN Mutual Recognition Arrangement on Tourism Professionals (MRA); and taking serious legal action against the misuse of brand names and copyright infringement in tour programs/products.
Ho Chi Minh City is one of the largest tourism centers in the country, receiving 50% of the total number of international visitors to Vietnam with the total tourism revenue accounting for about a quarter of the country’s total revenue in tourism industry.
