Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Calgary conducts port visit to Vietnam
The visit takes place from September 26-30, according to a statement of National Defense/Canadian Armed Forces.
Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Calgary is currently taking part in OP Projection in the Asia-Pacific to conduct forward naval presence operations in the region and support international naval exercises with partner nations.
The deployment is aimed to strengthen existing defense partnerships and establish new multinational relations in order to achieve greater interoperability and enhanced delivery of defense capabilities for future operations.
HMCS Calgary will be conducting a port visit in Da Nang, Vietnam from September 26 to 30, 2018, with daily events scheduled to support the mission of building and reenforcing international relations.
Commander Blair Saltel, Commanding Officer HMCS Calgary said: “The crew of HMCS Calgary looks forward to our visit to Vietnam. Widely known for its hospitality and a valued Canadian partner in Southeast Asia, Vietnam represents an opportunity for Calgary to work with the local community and demonstrate our commitment to being a valued partner. The highlight will come upon completion of the port visit when we put to sea to exercise with the Vietnam People’s Navy, so as to extend and improve our network of defense partnerships in the region.”
Meanwhile, Robert Bissett, Chargé d’affaires a.i. at the Embassy of Canada in Vietnam said: “We are delighted that the HMCS Calgary will visit Da Nang, Vietnam. This ship visit will help celebrate the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relation between Canada and Vietnam, and strengthen Canada’s engagement with Vietnam.”
HMCS Calgary is a Halifax-Class frigate that recently completed an extensive Halifax Class Modernization/Mid-Life Refit. The ship has approximately 230 highly trained and professional sailors who are well prepared to meet the challenges of their deployment on Operation PROJECTION.
It recently participated in the world’s largest international maritime warfare exercise which occurs biennially off the coast of Hawaii, RIMPAC. It will conduct port visits in 8 ports throughout OP Projection including Da Nang port in Vietnam.
