Hanoi targets record 25.5 million tourists in 2018
Hanoi targets to earn 72.5 trillion VND (3.2 billion USD) from receiving nearly 25.5 million tourists next year, a 7 percent increase against 2017, Nguyen Anh Dung, Deputy Director of the capital’s Department of Tourism, said.
Among the number, foreign visitors will be roughly 5.5 million, rising 11 per cent against 2017.
Dung said that a series of programs on tourism promotion, attraction and cooperation will be implemented to meet the targets.
Besides enhancing the development of high quality tourist products that are connected to the capital’s tourist trademarks, Hanoi will also increase the investment in infrastructure to boost high-end services. It hopes to have 80 above-3-star hotels and 600 hotels below 3-stars.
The department plans to continue enhancing cooperation with other cities and provinces to develop new tourism products, create tours linking popular attractions and other destinations both at home and overseas, and boost tourism promotion abroad.
It is also looking for investors in several key local projects, including the development of tourism services around West Lake and along Nhat Tan – Noi Bai route, the Ba Vi – Suoi Hai national resort complex and infrastructure development projects.
“Hanoi will actively deploy a series of solutions to maintain position as one of the world’s leading attractive destinations. We will cooperate with Hanoi-based embassies and international organizations to connect and promote tourism development at the international market, " Dung said.
The capital city estimated that it will welcome more than 23.8 million visitors and earn roughly 71 trillion VND (3.1 billion USD) from the tourism sector this year, an increase of 15 percent from the same period last year.
The number includes nearly 5 million foreign tourists from key markets such as China, the Republic of Korea, Japan, France, the US, Germany, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand and Canada.

The department also signed cooperation agreements with Hung Yen, Hai Duong, Vinh Phuc, Bac Ninh, Hoa Binh and southwestern provinces to develop new tourism products.
Besides organizing events including the 16th annual meeting of the Council for Promoting Tourism in Asia (CPTA) in Hanoi from October 20-25, 2017 to promote domestic tourism, the department also participated in major international tourism fairs such as the General Assembly of the Asia Pacific Cities Tourism Promotion Council (TPO) in South Korea; international tourism fairs and road shows in Japan, America, France, England; the Van Nam - Lao Cai - Quang Ninh - Hai Phong corridor cooperation meeting in Hai Phong.
The cooperation program with CNN to promote Hanoi on CNN international channel was also continued in 2017.
The Department of Tourism has so far collaborate with the diplomatic missions, international organizations, Vietnamese embassies abroad; airlines, media agencies, domestic and foreign major travel agents to introduce, promote, coordinate, exploit, and develop the domestic and international tourism markets.

It received over 4 million international visitors, up 23 percent against the previous year. Of which, nearly 2.9 million tourists made their stay in the capital, an increase of 24 percent.
