Hanoi subway station design on display for referendum
Cam Anh 16:01, 2018/03/10
Hanoi has just launched a referendum on building a subway station nearby the iconic Hoan Kiem Lake.
The city regulators acknowledge that constructions around the iconic lake are of particular importance, so the referendum will ensure that citizens and the government are on the same page when it comes to altering the lake’s vista.
Specifically, the referendum asks citizens about the construction of subway station C9 (Metro Line 2 stretching from Nam Thang Long to Tran Hung Dao). The referendum will take place from March 9 to 31 at the Ho Guom Information and Culture Center at 2 Le Thai To Street.

While the referendum is open, Hanoi Metropolitan Railway Management Board (MRB), the project’s management agency, will receive comments from local officials, people, and experts on the spot as well as through various channels such as email and online surveys to finalise the plan before submitting it to relevant authorities for approval.
“We came up with nine possible locations for the subway station and we are looking to find the most suitable one,” said Le Trung Hieu, Vice Head of MRB. “A Japanese consultant is backing us in design and construction planning,” he added.
The board also consulted some architects and now are collecting input from citizens before tabling the plans for final approval, according to Trung.
To minimize the effects of the construction to the surrounding landscape and environment, the Board will closely monitor every process. Sensitive sites will be equipped with “sensors” to report on subsidence and tilt to ensure timely repairs if needed.
Besides, robots would be used to dig the tunnel. The technology creates little to no subsidence, minimizing impact on surrounding areas.
Station C9 is proposed to be located at Km9 + 864,645 at the area of Hoan Kiem Lake’s flower garden on Dinh Tien Hoang Street. It will be 150m long, 21.4m wide, and 17.45m deep, with three floors and four entrances. At the end of last year, there was consultation on the station’s layout at a meeting between Hanoi authorities and relevant scientists, historians, and architects.
MRB said that the entirety of Line 2 has been deigned to connect with Line 1 and 3. Accordingly, Line 2’s Station C8 at Hang Dau Street will be connected to Line 1 (Ngoc Hoi-Nhu Quynh line). Station C10 at Hang Bai Street area will be connected to Line 3 (Nhon-Hoang Mai line).
C9 will be on Dinh Tien Hoang Street in the middle, within1km from both C8 and C10, making it convenient for passengers to reach all three urban railways.
Under the approved plan, the urban railway line will be 11.5km long, nearly 9km of which will run underground and 2.6 km above the surface. It will include a 17.5ha depot in Xuan Dinh ward, Bac Tu Liem district, and ten stations, three elevated and seven underground.
The project is estimated to cost over VND34.6 trillion, which will be funded from Japanese ODA and reciprocal capital from the State budget.
