Hanoi receives 500 more cherry trees from Japan
The move is in line with AEON Environmental Foundation’s commitment to support the plantation of 3,000 cherry trees in Hanoi.
AEON Environmental Foundation, in collaboration with the People’s Committee of Hanoi, held the Second Cherry Tree Planting event in Hanoi, Vietnam on March 10.
Throughout the event 500 cherry trees were planted by 200 volunteers. The saplings are grown from seeds of a variety of cherry trees from Fukuoka, where the climate is similar to Hanoi so that the plants can adapt to the local environment.
Earlier in March 2017, the foundation also planted 200 cherry trees at Hoa Binh Park, which is a for the project planting one million green trees of Hanoi, launched in 2016 by the city authorities. The program involves planting trees along city streets and parks as part of environmental conservation activities.
At the planting ceremony, Hanoi's Mayor Nguyen Duc Chung expressed gratitude for AEON Group and AEON Environmental Foundation for keeping their commitment of planting 3,000 cherry trees and contributing to the city’s target of one million green trees.
The Mayor also highly appreciated AEON Group’s efforts to cooperate with Hanoi by signing a MoU with the city in June 2017. Hence, AEON Group did not only expand its retail system as well as commercial transaction network in Hanoi but also held practical social activities, proving its responsibility to the community.
Beside, Chung emphasized that the event reflected the deep concern of Japanese businesses about Hanoi’s sustainable development targets. “We believe that this place will become a scenic spot for cherry blossoms to enlighten the local community and enrich people’s lives,” cited Chung.
2018 also marks the 45th year of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan. Hence, according to Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam, Kunio Umeda, the planting today is one of the events to celebrate this milestone as well as the key measures to solve Hanoi’s environmental issues. The Ambassador is also in high hopes that Hoa Binh Park would become a cultural exchange hub for the two countries in the next 10 or 20 years, as well as a popular leisure site for the citizens.
AEON Environmental Foundation has carried out tree planting projects in several countries, mainly in Asia. In Vietnam, 75,000 trees were planted at Lang Co Beach in Hue Province over the course of three years starting from 2010, and 15,000 trees have been planted in Ba Vi National Park near Hanoi over three years from 2014.
