Ha Giang issues action plan to lure 800,000 visitors by 2020

The People’s Committee of Ha Giang province has recently issued an action plan aimed to attract 800,000 tourists, including 130,000 foreigners, to the area by 2020.
Under the plan, which is designed to have tourism become the province’s key economic sector by2020, the northern mountainous province will increase the number of visitors the area to 950,000 by 2025 and 1.1 million by 2030, of which 250,000 and 380,000 are foreigners.
Total revenue from tourism will reach roughly VND1.3 trillion (US$) by 2020, and rising to VND2.8 trillion and VND5 trillion by 2025 and 2030, respectively.
The plans also set out targets of having some 2,600, 5,700 and 9,000 hotel rooms by 2020, 2025 and 2030, respectively.

Ha Giang has majestic mountain landscapes, of which the most beautiful sites are the UNESCO-recognized Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark and terraced fields in Hoang Su Phi District.
Prime Minister has recently also approved a master plan to develop the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark, Vietnam’s first geological park and the second in Southeast Asia recognized by UNESCO, until 2025 with a vision to 2030.
The UNESCO global geopark covers 232,606 hectares in districts of Dong Van, Meo Vac, Yen Minh and Quan Ba of Ha Giang Province. It was home to a population of about 283,000 in 2014, which is forecast to reach 320,000 – 325,000 by 2020 and 370,000 – 375,000 by 2030.
Under the plan, the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark will become a special tourist zone, representing for the entire Ha Giang Province. By 2030, it will meet all regulated criteria to become a national tourist area.
The geopark expects to welcome 800,000 visitors by 2020, of which 130,000 are foreigners. The number of tourists to the area will increase to 950,000 by 2025 and 1.1 million by 2030, including 250,000 and 380,000 foreigners, respectively. Turnover from tourism will reach VND1.3 trillion (US$57.27 million) by 2020, VND2.8 trillion by 2025 and VND5 trillion by 2030.
To meet the targets, authorities will focus on attracting domestic visitors from Hanoi and urban areas in the Red River region such as Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Nam Dinh, Ninh Binh and Thai Binh.
As for international markets, tourist promotion programs will give priorities to countries with high spending such as France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Japan and South Korea. Other markets in ASEAN, mainland China and Taiwan will be also exploited.
The number of tourist arrivals to Ha Giang province rises nearly 32.5 percent on average each year, and is estimated to reach 1 million with a revenue of VND950 billion this year.
In a recent investment promotion conference, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that Ha Giang should focus on boosting tourism through diversifying tourism products, developing community-based tourism, restoring and promoting traditional festivals and cultural values.
Meanwhile, Nguyen Van Tuan, Director General of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, urged joint efforts of the provincial authorities and tour operators at home and abroad.
Tran The Dung, Director of a Ho Chi Minh City-based travel agency, said the province should further tap existing adventure tours at Tu San mountain, and tour route of Gam river, Bac Me and Hoang Su Phi terraced field. 
Nguyen Van Son, Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, said called on domestic and foreign investors to engage in tourism projects in the province and committed all possible support to them.
