Final solution for Tan Son Nhat expansion announced
Cam Anh 17:10, 2018/04/17
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has made his conclusion on the expansion plan for Tan Son Nhat airport.
Accordingly, the PM agreed with the suggestion of the French consultant company ADP-I to build a new passenger terminal south of Tan Son Nhat aiport in Ho Chi Minh City as part of the airport expansion plan.
PM believes this could handle overload in air transport, ensure effective land use and reduce investment costs and guarantee safety and security in line with regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organisation.

The new terminal is expected to serve 20 million passengers per year, helping raise the airport’s capacity to 50 million passengers annually by 2025. At the same time, it’s provided with additional supplement constructions, like sites for goods storage, plan repair, logistic…
Prime Minister assigned the Ministry of Transport (MoT) to direct ADPI in coordination with domestic expert group to compile the adjustment of the expansion plan, ensuring the effective land use in the north and the south of the airport. At the same time, the Ministry must seek for possible finance sources and finalize legal dossiers for approving the adjustment, paving the way to promptly start the construction.
He also asked the ministry to work with the HCM City People’s Committee to devise feasible measures to reduce traffic jams around the airport.
Tan Son Nhat now has two terminals serving 32 million passengers annually, well above its designed capacity of 25 million. It only has two runways that are sometimes closed due to flooding or lightning strikes. The airport also has space for only 57 aircraft at a time. Previously, in July 2017, Aeroports de Paris (ADP), parent company of ADPi, acquired 20% total shares of Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), and became strategic partner of this corporation.
