Film Screening “Hamlet” on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)
Chi Le 21:35, 2017/02/25
An example of cross-gender casting in which actress Maxine Peake starred as the male protagonist.
EDI Film Screening showcasing “Hamlet” by Maxine Peake (2015), an example of cross-gender casting, will be screened at Cafe Thu 7 on Sunday 26 February in Ho Chi Minh City and on Monday, 27 February in Hanoi.
The focus for this year’s Inclusion Week is gender. Often a focus on gender is equated with a focus on women, and while it is true that in many contexts women continue to have unequal access to things like education, fair pay and personal freedom, a focus on gender goes far beyond a focus on women only.
As part of the Inclusion Week, the British Council will present the film version of Hamlet – with BAFTA-nominated actress Maxine Peake in the title role – in its sell-out run at Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre. Peak’s Hamlet is one example of cross-gender casting.
Shakespeare's most iconic work, "Hamlet" explodes with big ideas and is the ultimate story of loyalty, love, betrayal, murder and madness. Hamlet's father is dead and Denmark has crowned Hamlet's uncle the new king. Consumed by grief, Hamlet struggles to exact revenge, with devastating consequences.
