The Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) held a ceremony to launch the first turbine of the Lai Chau hydropower plant in Lai Chau province on December 23. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung attended the event.

On behalf of the Government, Prime Minister (PM) Nguyen Tan Dung highly praised the continuous efforts by the investor – the EVN – and over 8,000 technicians, engineers and workers during almost five years to put the first turbine of Lai Chau hydropower plant into operation and make it part of the national grid.
At the same time, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung appreciated relevant ministries, agencies and units in cooperation, support to the EVN during project implementation, and the province's efforts to resettle for 8,500 local residents to serve the work.
Addressing the ceremony, the PM asked that in 2016, the EVN must ensure the safe and effective operation of the first turbine and strive to put into use the two remaining turbines as expected.
The first turbine of the Lai Chau hydropower plant officially generated electricity to the national grid on December 14, three months ahead of schedule.
The Lai Chau hydropower plant with total investment of 35.700 billion, the third largest of its kind on the Da River, is also expected to fuel the socio-economic development and help ensure security-defence in the northwestern region,
When the plant takes operational, it will join the Son La and Hoa Binh hydropower factories on the mainstream Da River to provide about one-third (25 billion kWh a year) of Vietnam’s total hydroelectricity output.
The plant will greatly help control the flow of the Da River, contain floods in the lower reach, including Hanoi capital, in the rainy season, and supply water in the dry season for the North Delta.
It will contribute to promote socio-economic development for provinces of Lai Chau, Dien Bien and ensure the national security in the northwestern region.
