Environment Sanitation Key for Tourism Development
Mindful about the interaction between environment and tourism development, the capital city of Hanoi has issued policies to ensure healthy environment and urban order.
Urban masterplanning cannot bypass environment. All urban masterplans are aimed at building modern cities and meeting the demands of citizens while maintaining the quality of the environment according to certain standards. Urban masterplans are expected to ensure the health of residents and reduce the damages on the natural surroundings. At the same time, they are crucial to preserve the limited natural resources of the urban area. Hanoi, as any other world cities, also issued regulations and policies on urban planning to improve the urban environment and to raise the people’s living standards, considering these policies as ways to develop tourism, the non-smoke industry.
Over the recent years, the city’ leaders have paid due attention in city’s planning and environment improvement. In 2016, Hanoi made four breakthroughs in implementing policies toward building an orderly and friendly city, which are the garbage collection system modernization, the city’s “afforestation” with the plantation of a million trees, drinkable water provision and 80 polluting lake water treatment.
Among all the achievements, the most remarkable accomplishment is the application of Redoxy-3C, a chemical product made at the Hanoi People’s Committee order to clean the polluted lakes. After successfully piloting the product in Giap Bat, Ho Me and Ba Mau, three of the most polluted lakes, the City will apply the product in the West Lake and all other lakes in Hanoi. Before the treatment, lake water was contaminated with organic water pollutant and the eutrophication process. The lake water was dark green with fetid order. But five days of Redoxy 3C application has cleaned the water, eliminated the bad smell and allowed the normal development of aquatic microbial ecology. The surface water returned to the safe standards.
As the urbanization process produces a jungle of suffocating concrete blocks and asphalted roads, trees become a refreshing factor. That’s why the one million tree program launched by Hanoi Chairman Nguyen Duc Chung was welcomed by Hanoi city dwellers. So far, 210 thousand trees have been planted, regreening the city’s parks and pavement. In addition, the city is agressively implementing the garbage collection modernization to ensure environment sanitation.
All the efforts have resulted in a green, clean and friendly city of Hanoi, appropriate to welcome tourists and become a favorable destination. In the first half of 2017, about ten million tourists have visited Hanoi, a rise of 7.6 percent year on year. Among these visitors, two million are foreigners, a year on year increase of 14 percent. Tourism revenue reached roughly 29,203 billion dong (1.5 billion dollars), up 12 percent compared with the same period last year.
The figures speak for themselves as revenue from tourism is on the rise, confirming the city’s determination in improving the environment and creating premises for the “non-smoke”industry to develop in the coming time.
