Nguyen Tung 10:14, 2017/06/20
A tour to learn about the closed circuit farming and farming in association with tourism was recently organized by the Hanoi Livestock Breeding Center to heads of economic devision and farm owners in the North of Vietnam.
The delegation visited the closed circuit pig breeding model by T& T 159 company in the hilly area of Su Ngoi commune, Hoa Binh city. The farm rears the pigs following a closed circuit chain to ensure  food safety. Its main products consist of cows and pigs, both breeding stock and commercial products. The company has imported cattle from Thailand and Australia with the aim of improving local cattle breeds. Cows are usually raised using the traditional method and mostly fed with  fermented forage.

The company’s pig farming consist of wild boar and pure-bred Mong Cai pigs. Currently,it continues to develop the cross  between wild boars and Mong Cai pigs. According to Tran Anh Dung, the President of T&T 159,  as 40% pig feed  are forage, potato, cornmeal, bean meal and biochemical yeast,  the weight gain rate is moderate at a rate of 10-15 kg per month only and only after 6.5 months of raising can pigs be sold. In particular, 15 days before selling, pigs are raised outdoors.

All livestock wastes are treated to avoid environmental pollution. Apart from animal breedings, the farm  grows vegetables, potatoes, trees and plant flowers to create a balanced ecological system. Its  products are available on the Hanoi market, both through  wholesale chain  and retail stores.

The delegation  also visited the educational farm Edufarm or Edufarm Academy, in Thuy Xuan Tien commune, Chuong My District. Edufarm offers 5 modules: Vietnamese house culture, animal breeding diversification in agriculture; insect diversity, seafood diversity  and Vietnamese folk games.

The  insect module showcases  a diversity of insects used in agricultural production such as bees, butterflies, moths, ladybugs, lemongrass beetles, and fireflies, all  displayed in interactive rooms.

In the aquatic and sea product module, there are specialized rooms on aquatic and sea products.  The Vietnamese folk games module  includes activities such as playing O An Quan (Mandarin’s Box), danh khang (tip-cat) or soccer, jumping rope, playing hide-and-seek.

Besides, the farm has a mini agricultural-themed museum showing the pride of Vietnamese agriculture including catfi sh, coffee and rice, the national foreign exchange earners. Accoding to Doctor Su Thanh Long, founder of Edufarm, the farm offers different educational tours to groups of different ages who want to know about agricultural production, especially to introduce the sustainable and organic farm model, as well as smart agriculture.

According to the Director of the Hanoi Livestock Breeding Center Ta Van Tuong, Hanoi is home to many  craft villages which produce diverse  farm specialties, able to draw a large number of visitors.  Therefore,  the goals of the visit are not only to help the executives and farm owners learn about  the livestock model that assures food safety, but also for them to study the farm model associated with ecological tourism. ”The advancement of agri-tourism will lead to many opportunities for agricultural products and craft villages,” Tuong said.
