Bamboo and rattan craft in Hanoi's Ninh So commune

Located along the Red River, Ninh So commune in Thuong Tin district, is known as one of the famous traditional village of rattan and bamboo. The products of the village are sold widely in domestic market and exported to many countries.

Bamboo weaving craft in Ninh So commune originated in the King Le Canh Hung period, about 400 years ago, with Bang So hamlet being an impressive part of the craft village.
The artisans in the village said that hundreds of years ago ago, the profession gradually spread, “covering” the whole village, and the social. With a long tradition, the family has their own workers, from young men, women, the elderly, young children can participate in a certain segment of the profession. Customers in foreign markets have been interested in Ninh So's rattan products. Currently, bamboo and rattan products of Ninh So commune are exported to numerous countries around the world, including the key markets such as Eastern Europe, Japan, Republic of Korea.

Most of customers appreciate the quality and design of the village's products.
In the condition of high requirements for exports, the village must be converted to large and concentrated productions, firms need invest modern equipments with the aim to seek more customers.
According to Nguyen Thi Nguyet, Nguyet Vu rattan owner in Xuan Duong 3 village said that mass-produced goods as in the past in locality do not meet current export demand. Therefore, she orders the artisans to weave the rough products which will be reprocessed for a finished product.
The turnover of Nguyet Vu rattan owner reachs about 3 billion VND per year, she added. Her family also is creating regular jobs for nearly 20 workers with an income from 3-5 million VND per person monthly and hundreds of workers in satellites villages in the commune.

In order to develop sustainable bamboo and rattan productions, business and export, Ninh So commune should focus on developing human resources, enhancing vocational training and setting up artisans team.
In addition, businesses need to develop market strategies, actively explore the market to diversify bamboo and rattan products meeting with consumer demand. Workers in Ninh So is looking forward to the city's authorities to create conditions and support businesses in accessing preferential loans and land to stabilize production
