The event is expected to draw 400 athletes from 27 teams from Hanoi and neighbouring provinces of Hai Duong, Hung Yen and Thai Nguyen. They will compete in different men’s, women’s and mixed categories in the capital city’s West Lake.
In addition, they will compete in two other categories: standard and traditional boat racing. Accordingly, the first, second and third prizes will amount to VND100 million (US$4,400), respectively.
Boat racing is growing popular in many ASEAN member-countries, so the city plans to invite their athletes to take part in the next festivals if the first is held successfully, To Van Dong, director of the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, said.
Hanoi wants to develop the West Lake as a key tourism area with the dragon boat racing festival as one of the most attractive activities, he added.
A music show will be held on the sidelines of the event to build up excitement. Before the competition takes place, athletes of the boat racing and some other water sports will join a bike parade along the West Lake.
The festival will be held under the cooperation and development program of culture, sports and tourism between Hanoi and national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines.
In Hoi An, the same festival is held annually on the 2nd of lunar January. The boat racing festivals are organized in order to bring a cheerful atmosphere for people in spring. It is not only a competition, but also a ritual in honor of the Water God, stemming from the act of praying for water.
For competition events, dragon boats are generally rigged with decorative Chinese dragon heads and tails. At other times, the decorative regalia are usually removed, although the drum often remains on board for training purposes. Boat racing has become an event to compete and display collective strength.
