Zoom in "World Cleanup Day" in Hanoi

Thousands of people have spent their weekend day collecting garbage around Hanoi in an event named "World Cleanup Day" along with millions of volunteers in 150 countries across the globe.
Conceived 10 years ago in Estonia as part of the Let’s Do It! World movement, "World Cleanup Day" harnesses the power of everyday people — 4% of the global population — to work towards one goal: a clean and healthy planet.
The event was organized on September 15 by Keep Hanoi Clean (KHC), a social enterprise founded in 2016 by James Joseph Kendall — a long-term American resident of Hanoi, who was concerned about the levels of trash in and around his neighbourhood. KHC kicked off when James rallied a group of friends to clean up an area where trash was dumped in and around a storm water canal.
“KHC joined this event because we wanted to show our solidarity with global citizens committed to a sustainable planet,” said Douglas Snyder, General Director of KHC. “We are thrilled to create an opportunity for Hanoians to connect with this world-wide event.”
Bruno Angelet, EU Ambassador to Vietnam, one of the event's volunteer said: “Today, together with the Vietnamese friends, we want to clean up Hanoi”.
The joining of EU delegation in this event also marked the beginning of the European Climate Diplomacy Week in Vietnam, which is jointly held by the EU delegation in Vietnam and other European embassies, with the aim of raising awareness on environmental protection and climate change.
