The Vietnamese government has paid much attention to investing and upgrading Noi Bai International Airport to meet the socio-economic development.

In order to ensure the development of Noi Bai International Airport into a modern air port and the number one international gateway of Vietnam, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung has assigned the Ministry of Transport to work out a plan to expand and adjust the planning scheme of the airport which is facing serious overloading.

Dung requested the ministry to coordinate with experts and consultancy firms to review the development planning scheme of the Hanoi-based international airport by 2030 with a vision towards 2050.

The ministry was asked to consider the possibility of expanding the airport to the north in an attempt to raise its capacity to 50 million passengers per year. Besides, Noi Bai airport will probably be enlarged towards the south, enabling it to accommodate 80-100 million passengers per year.

The Noi Bai International Airport now has a capacity of serving 25 million passengers per year, with two terminals and two runways.

The Ministry of Transport will receive non-refundable official development assistance from the French government to conduct the study and amend the planning scheme of Noi Bai International Airport.

The Deputy PM also assigned the People’s Committee of Hanoi to work with the Ministry of Transport in managing the land area needed for the expansion project with the vision to 2050. The city together with the ministry will have to work out a plan for site clearance and allocate land for residential resettlement, to study airport urban planning to meet the objectives of sustainable development.

The Ministry of Transport will take initiative in proposing capital sources and have to fix damages in the airport’s runways and carry out the second phase of the construction of the international terminal T2 under the planning approved by competent authorities.

Deputy PM Dung asked the Ministry of Transport to review the law, and to comprehensively assess the difficulties and obstacles to take initiative in proposing the form of management of the aviation infrastructure system. It is necessary to clarify the powers of units managing and operating airports and airfields, he added.
