Minister of Science and Technology named Deputy Party Chief of Hanoi

With this decision, Minister of Science and Technology Chu Ngoc Anh could set to become Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee.

Vietnam’s Politburo, the country’s supreme decision-making body, has approved Minister of Science and Technology Chu Ngoc Anh to the position of Deputy Secretary of Hanoi’s Party Committee.

At a meeting of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly on September 17, Minister and Chairman of the Government Office Mai Tien Dung revealed Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc could propose relieving Mr. Anh of his duties as Minister of Science and Technology in the upcoming National Assembly’s sitting, scheduled to start from October 19 to mid-November.

With this decision, Mr. Anh could become Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee in replacement of former Chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung, who has been suspended from duties for 90 days due to his involvement in some criminal cases on August 11.

Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen Van Suu is currently temporarily taking charge of the city’s operations.

Born in Ba Vi district of Hanoi, Mr. Anh, 55, holds a PhD degree and assumed various important position in the Party and government.

Starting off as a lecturer of the Institute for Technical Physics under the Hanoi University of Science and Technology in 1988, Mr. Anh took over his first major political position as Deputy Minister of Science and Technology in August 2010.

In March 2013, he was designated Deputy Secretary of the Phu Tho Provincial Party committee and two months later appointed Chairman of Phu Tho Provincial People’s Committee.

He returned to the position of Deputy Minister of Science and Technology in September 2015 and  was promoted to Minister of Science and Technology from April  2016.
