Before his meeting with North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un, US President Donald Trump was received by Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on February 27.
During the meeting, US President Donald Trump thanks Vietnam for meticulous preparations for the high-profile meeting, affirming that the US attaches great importance to the Vietnam - US comprehensive partnership as well as Vietnam's role in the Indo-Pacific region.
On his side, Party General Secretary and President Trong expressed his delight at the positive and comprehensive progress in the Vietnam - US relations, which has helped bring practical benefits to the countries’ people.
He appreciated the US’s cooperation in economy-trade, education, and settlement of war consequences, especially commencing the environmental remediation of dioxin contamination in Bien Hoa airport and other dioxin contaminated areas.
Following the talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of several economic cooperation documents worth over US$21 billion in total.
On the same day, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc welcomed US President Donald Trump and his entourage on their visit to Vietnam and lauded the significance of the second summit between the US and North Korea in promoting the denuclearisation and making sustainable peace on the Korean Peninsula. He also applauded the US and North Korea’s choosing of Vietnam as the venue for their important summit.
At the meeting, the two sides shared the view that bilateral relations have been growing substantively in many fields, from politics-diplomacy, security-defence, education-training, to the settlement of war consequences. Notably, bilateral trade topped US$60 billion in 2018 with the US’s exports to Vietnam surging by 46%, making the Southeast Asian nation one of the fastest growing markets of the US.
To promote the economic-trade upward trend, they agreed to keep implementing existing cooperation mechanisms like the Vietnam - US Bilateral Trade Agreement and the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement.
