The city’s Committee for Traffic Safety in cooperation with Department of Education and Training and Honda Vietnam on September 5 held a ceremony offering helmets to primary schoolchildren in the city, the Kinh Te & Do Thi newspaper reported.

The event is in line with the city’s plan issued in June 2019 to give helmets to schoolchildren in the city in 2019.

The given plan aims to boost the coverage of standardized helmets among children to 80% by 2020 and 100% of schoolchildren wear helmets they were given to when commuting, according to the committee.

The plan is expected to improve awareness of traffic safety and compulsory helmet wearing for commuters who travel by motorbikes and electronic bikes, greatly contributing to reducing traffic accidents among children.

At the helmet-giving ceremony held at Tran Quoc Toan Primary School in Hoan Kiem District, Honda Vietnam said the company will offer more than 176,000 helmets to all 1st-grade children in Hanoi for the 2019 – 2020 school year.

Tran Quoc Toan Primary School alone got 338 helmets from Honda Vietnam.

Helmet giving is an annual program organized by the National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC), the Ministry of Education and Training, and Honda Vietnam to realize the government’s plan on wearing helmets and enhancing traffic safety.

In the 2018 – 2019 academic year, nearly two million helmets were given to schoolchildren across the country.
