Danang tops Vietnam ICT ranking for 11 years, Hanoi and HCMC drop

Vietnam’s central city of Danang maintains its highest rank in the 2019 Vietnam ICT Index for the 11th consecutive year while Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City drop five ranks.

With 0.8654 points, Danang continues outperforming other localities in the readiness index rankings for the development and application of information and communications technology (Vietnam ICT Index) 2019, followed by the neighboring province of Thua Thien – Hue 0.8046 points and the northern province of Quang Ninh 0.7350 points.

Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City ranks seventh with 0.5704 points, dropping five places in the 2019 rankings, Hanoi holds the eighth position with 0.5421 points, falling from the third place in 2018. 

Among state agencies, the Ministry of Finance retains the 1st rank it has been holding for the past three years with 0.9770 points, followed by the Vietnam Social Security which also keeps its 2nd position for the last three years. 

The Government Inspectorate is at the bottom of the table among 19 ministries and government agencies rated. 

The rankings have been developed by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) in cooperation with the Vietnam Association for Information Processing (VAIP) for the last 14 years.

The 2019 ICT Index Rankings collect assessment on three main factors namely technical infrastructure, human resources and IT application based on the United Nations index system.

Speaking at the announcement of the 2019 ICT Index Rankings on August 23, Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung highlighted the importance of ICT in the era for Industry 4.0. Vietnam needs to seize the opportunity to accelerate its digitalization for the development, he said.

Therefore, it is important to develop 100,000 ICT enterprises and train 1,000 digital transformation experts for ministries, sectors, localities and businesses, Hung suggested, urging a focus on technology consultancy, transfer and application in all fields, the Nhan Dan newspaper reported.
